Catarina Neto Barroso commissions

Experience the authenticity of Catarina Neto Barroso commissions

Working outdoors in São Tomé, Catarina Neto Barroso lets the island itself become part of her art. Dust from the streets and salt carried on the breeze settle into the layers of paint — almost invisible to the eye, yet giving each canvas a unique texture and sense of place. This authenticity runs through all her commissions, making every painting not only a work of art but also a fragment of São Tomé itself. Collectors value this connection to place, and through Zoom consultations they can discuss ideas directly with the artist and request original, custom pieces rooted in her distinctive process and attentive creative dialogue, ensuring each commission reflects both client and island.

Today, her paintings are displayed at Bom Bom, where visitors encounter her work as part of the island’s growing movement in São Tomé contemporary art. As a recognised Bom Bom artist, she has become known for weaving the textures of the islands into canvas, producing commissions that resonate with both local audiences and international collectors. Those interested in commissioning São Tomé art have the opportunity to work with her directly, securing original pieces that carry the spirit of the islands into private collections worldwide, where they serve as lasting reminders of place, memory, and the enduring cultural presence of São Tomé.

Catarina Neto Barroso São Tomé Artist

Catarina’s paintings are shaped by the island of São Tomé, where space and materials are limited. Vistors who are interested but do not wish to commission her work are welcome to support her with supplies.  Working outdoors, the dust of the streets — almost invisible to the eye — settles into her canvas, adding a subtle layer that speaks to the essence of the island itself. The tropical rain often interrupts her work, providing moments of contemplation that deepen her connection to the environment. Through this process, Catarina Barroso creates distinctive commissions that capture the authentic spirit of São Tomé life, a perspective that has also brought her recognition within the wider community of São Tomé artists.

Catarina Neto Barroso Island Life on Canvas

São Toméan artist Catarina Barroso paints the everyday pressures faced by women in São Tomé — prejudice, gendered expectations, and the silence around domestic and sexual violence. In 2025 her first solo exhibition, O Grito Mudo, brought those experiences into view. Later that year, Catarina Barroso took part in a residency in France at POUSH/Duvangu, carrying São Tomé’s contemporary art voice to wider audiences and opening the way for new Catarina Neto Barroso commissions from collectors seeking authentic work by a leading São Tomé artist.

Sao Tome in every brushtroke

Catarina Barroso’s paintings grow out of the island’s textures and rhythms. Working with limited materials, she turns the constraints of place into strength, layering colour and surface to reflect both fragility and endurance. Each piece carries São Tomé’s presence — not as a backdrop, but as an active part of the work itself. Through these works, Catarina Barroso has become recognised as a leading São Tomé artist, with new  commissions sought by collectors who value the authenticity of São Tomé contemporary art.
