Meet at City Hotel
This São Tomé Walking Tour is flexible, informal, and shaped around your pace and interests. It usually begins in central São Tomé city, although the exact meeting point can be arranged in advance. Many guests like to start with coffee or chocolate, and both can easily be built into the route. If you would like, the walk can begin with a visit to Diogo Vaz’s tasting space or a stop at Claudio Corallo’s workshop, where some of São Tomé’s best-known chocolate is still made by hand. It’s a little leve-leve in relation to opening hours, so we can’t guarantee they are in the mood for guests.
The route is not fixed. It shifts depending on what is open, what feels lively, and what interests you most on the day. On a typical walk, you might pass the pink façade of the Presidential Palace, step inside the city’s main cathedral, and continue through the old colonial square towards the National Museum. There is time to pause at local stalls, enter churches, take photographs of daily life, or sit by the harbour and watch the city move around you.
What makes this tour different is who leads it. We work with English-speaking university students studying for English degrees at USTP. That gives the experience a more personal and grounded feel than a standard commercial city tour, while also helping support local students working towards their degrees here in São Tomé. The lower price reflects that model, but it also reflects our wider ethos. By booking through The Chocolate Islands, you are not just joining a walking tour, you are also helping keep more of the value of tourism within São Tomé itself.
Some guests like to include a late afternoon swim at Praia Melão, a quiet local beach just east of the centre. Others prefer to spend more time in the city’s older neighbourhoods, learning about architecture, history, and how independence shaped modern São Tomé. The walk does not involve steep climbs or long distances, so comfortable sandals are usually enough, although we still recommend sun protection and water. This is totally flexible, tell us what you want to do, maybe eat at a local place or try a local bar, it’s totally up to you, just let us know when you enquire.
The São Tomé Walking Tour costs €35 per person, with group discounts available. It runs year-round and usually lasts between two and three hours, depending on the route and pace. Advance booking helps us keep the experience small and personal. This is not a scripted tour. It is a real walk through a real city, led by local university students, with a more grounded and community-based approach.

The pink Presidential Palace stands out across from the cathedral, its pastel colonial façade making it one of São Tomé’s most recognisable landmarks. Walking tours often pause here to take in the building’s formal grounds and distinctive architecture, which still shape the character of this part of the city. Nearby, there is also the striking contrast of an old damaged military tank, a reminder of the country’s more difficult post-independence period.
Security around the palace can be tight, especially if visitors move too close or start taking photos in the wrong direction, but your guide will help you handle that smoothly and show you the best way to view the area without causing problems. It is a small but telling detail, and one that reflects the wider character of São Tomé, traces of Portuguese colonial rule alongside the symbols of a newer national identity.
A walking tour highlight featuring Italian chocolatier Claudio Corallo’s artisanal operation, producing exceptional chocolate from São Tomé’s volcanic-grown cacao. Depending on the time and their opening hours, visitors may tour the facility and taste the distinctive products. If your keen to visit here, let us know in advance as hours are irregular but we can let you know the best time to start.
Located in the heart of the capital, the Cathedral of São Tomé is a key stop on any São Tomé walking tour. This early 16th-century church blends colonial architecture with local history, offering a quiet place to reflect amid the bustle of the city. Its white façade and bell tower overlook Independence Square, making it a favourite spot for photos and a symbolic start to understanding the island’s Portuguese and African heritage. Visitors can respectfully enter, but this is a place of worship, the symbolic heart of Catholicism on the island, so sit in serenity, rather than snap pictures inside.
Forte de São Sebastião is one of the most natural stops on a São Tomé walking tour, sitting right by the waterfront at the entrance to the bay. The structure is known for its thick whitewashed walls, open courtyard areas and simple defensive layout, which make it easy for visitors to explore without needing long explanations. The setting is quiet, with views across the water and back towards the city, giving a clear sense of how the coastline shaped the early development of São Tomé.
Inside, the fort has a combination of open-air sections and small interior rooms. The atmosphere is calm and reflective, which makes it a useful pause point during a city route. Because it is compact and easy to navigate, it fits smoothly into a relaxed walking itinerary. As part of a São Tomé walking tour, the stop provides structure, shade and a clear link to the island’s early colonial period without overwhelming visitors.
Generally speaking it’s 2.5 to three hours, but this is a lively bustling city, if you want to stop for a coffee or talk to some local people with your guide acting as a translator, you can, and it doesn’t impact the rest of the tour.
Any admission charges, but nothing is going to run you more than a few Euros, purchases at Diago Vaz or the chocolate factory are also down to you. It’s addictive, and we’re afraid of the bills at the end!
It runs year-round and can be tailored to suit your schedule. São Tomé city is warm throughout the year, with most rain falling between October and May. We can adjust the start time to avoid the midday heat or fit around your arrival. Whether you prefer a quiet morning walk or a sunset route by the harbour, the tour is flexible to your plans.
Nothing special is needed. It’s a relaxed city walk, not a trek. Wear comfortable shoes, bring whatever you’d normally take for a stroll — maybe a small bottle of water or a camera. If you forget something, we can stop along the way.
Sometimes we can fit you in at last minute, but, advance booking is strongly recommended. Small group sizes ensure a quality experience, and availability fills quickly during peak travel months.
