Southern São Tomé and Principe
9.3 Superb
Lagoa Amélia is one of São Tomé’s best-known highland walks, following forest paths into the old crater area near the centre of the island. The route usually takes around three hours and passes through dense vegetation, cooler mountain air and one of the island’s richest botanical zones.
This is a good walk for travellers interested in plants as much as scenery. Along the way, guides point out endemic species, medicinal plants and other distinctive features of São Tomé’s forest ecology. One of the most striking sights is the giant begonia, a plant closely associated with the island’s highland environment.
The route also passes an important water source area linked to São Tomé’s river system, which gives the walk more depth than a simple viewpoint trail. Overall, this is a medium-level trek best suited to visitors looking for a quieter, more nature-focused experience with local guidance.
